Eating

What does healthy eating mean?
• Healthy eating means a balanced and varied diet, and portions that are in keeping with your hunger level.

• Remember that during adolescence, your body changes and grows. So your energy requirements, indicated by your appetite, are likely to increase.

• To eat well, you need to have the right information!

Canada’s Food Guide provides information on the types of food that are important for you to eat, and on the number of portions per day depending on your age. The food categories are as follows:
  • Vegetables and fruit
  • Grain products
  • Milk and alternatives
  • Oils and fats
  • Beverages
• For more information on healthy eating or if you have questions, feel free to consult a professional such as a nutritionist or nurse at your school or CLSC.

Careful! Avoid using food to try and manage your emotions. Sometimes people tend to use food to try and make themselves feel better, like it was the key to their happiness. But this isn’t so! Food won’t help you resolve your conflicts and if you overeat, it can lead to health problems. It’s better to try and figure out why you’re feeling the way you are, and take appropriate measures to resolve your problems.

Beware of the yoyo effect! You may turn to food when you aren’t feeling good about your body. But skipping meals, not eating enough or overeating can cause health problems. The key is to keep everything balanced!
