Piercings and tattoos

Why get pierced or tattooed?
• Some adolescents feel the need to mark their body to differentiate themselves from other people, to make themselves feel more attractive or because it’s in fashion. It’s up to you to decide, based on your needs and values, if it’s worth doing!

• It’s important for you to be aware that piercings and tattoos are both permanent and will be on your body for the rest of your life.

• Here are a few things to think about to help you weigh the pros, cons and risks associated with piercing and tattoos:
- Have you considered the fact that fashions change and that what might be in fashion now may not be a few months or years from now?

- What are you going to do if you no longer like your piercing or tattoo a few years from now?

- Have you asked for your parents’ permission?

- Have you thought about the social or emotional risks associated with piercings or tattoos given that some people have prejudices toward people who have them?

- Are you aware that some employers don’t allow their employees to have piercings or tattoos?

- Have you thought about what your piercing or tattoo might look like or how appropriate it will be when you’re 30, 40, 50, or 75 years old?

- Have you considered that your skin will change as you age, based on your weight fluctuations, and that this will change the look of your piercing or tattoo?

- Have you thought about talking things over with your friends or adults who got pierced or tattooed when they were teenagers? What, according to them, are the pros and cons?

- What are your personal reasons for getting pierced or tattooed?

Required age. It’s best to check with the person who will be doing your tattoo to find out how old you have to be. Nonetheless, it’s recommended that you have your parents’ written consent.

Other ways of standing out. Piercings and tattoos aren’t the only ways you can stand out or create your own style. There are many others methods that have the advantage of not being permanent and that will allow you to follow the fashion trends as you wish: clothes, accessories, hair styles, dyes, makeup, temporary tattoos and, above all, your own personality and the activities in which you’re involved.
