When your parents break up
The consequences
Your parents' decision to separate has several consequences. Who will the children live with? What will the custody arrangements be? How will family possessions be separated? When adults agree at least a bit, it's easier to work these things out. But when they can't talk to each other, they sometimes involve a mediator or lawyer. This has an impact on the children, which is why you have a right to make yourself heard. Even though separation is a decision between adults, you have a right to speak up and explain what you think of the situation and what you're feeling, since there are consequences for you too.
