Being a guy

Black or white: no grey zones!
Either things are great or things are horrible. Nothing in between. Sound familiar?

Life is full of nuances and colours! Thinking that EVERYTHING is terrible when you're suffering may lead you to isolate yourself, suffer intensely, or not see the good sides of a situation. Sometimes, when some parts of our lives aren’t going so well, it's helpful to remember the good parts, like a friend’s calling or your team winning the game.

A couple of questions you might want to ask yourself…
  • Have you ever said “EVERYTHING’s wrong” or “Nothing’s going my way”?
  • How did you feel when you said that?
  • Would it be helpful to keep in mind what's going well in your life, not just what's causing you pain?

Complain
So, you're a guy and:
  • things aren’t going so well?
  • you're hurting and don't know why?
  • you're not comfortable asking for help?
  • you tell yourself "things aren’t that bad... I can handle it!"
It's not always easy for guys to admit that they need help. This section will give you some pointers that should make asking for help as painless as possible.

COMPLAIN

"Boys don’t cry!" Have you ever heard this saying? This type of message is often what we base our behaviour on.

"Be strong!" Guys are supposed to be strong, independent, and in control, and not show when they're hurting. That’s just not true! Just because you’re a guy doesn’t mean you don't have feelings, can't be going through a tough time, and can't suffer or cry. And you have just as much right as anyone else to get help when you're going through a rough period.

A couple of questions you might want to ask yourself…
  • How do you think a guy should deal with his problems?
  • Does your opinion influence your decision to get help?

Coping with pain
"Deal with it!" Boys react differently than girls to physical and psychological pain. It’s good to be able to endure things, but there are limits. If you’ve reached your physical or psychological limit and try to stick it out even more, your problems will probably just get worse.

A couple of questions you might want to ask yourself…
  • Have you ever endured things that were really too much for you?
  • What happened because of that?
  • Do you think it would have helped if you had had someone’s help right then?
