Worrisome physical signs
This section describes some physical symptoms that you may have when things aren’t going well. But, remember that these symptoms may also occur if you’re sick or have consumed alcohol or drugs. Of course, if the problem is physical, you should absolutely get help!

Excessive fatigue. You’ve slept for 12 hours and you’re still tired. When you walk you feel like you’re carrying a ton of bricks. Your head and shoulders seem heavy. You don’t have it in you to carry out your everyday activities. At school, you just want to put your head down and sleep on your desk. You don’t feel up to participating in sports, even your favourite ones.

Insomnia. You spend much of the night thinking about the things you’re worried about. Or the feelings you have are so strong they're keeping you up at night.

A lump in your throat.
You constantly feel like someone's strangling you. The pain may be so intense you have a hard time breathing or swallowing.

Stomach ache. Your stomach is killing you. You feel so bad when you think about your problems that you want to throw up.

Decreased or increased appetite. You’re never hungry anymore. Your meals have no taste and you have to force yourself to eat. Food has become the least of your concerns. Or your pain is making you eat even more than usual. You feel like the only thing that makes you feel better is eating the things you like.

Putting on or losing weight. Your weight may fluctuate depending on the stress you’re under, the emotions you’re feeling, and the situations you’re going through.

Muscular tension. Your jaws are clenched. Your hands are clenched. You feel restless. You feel like a bomb that might go off any minute.

Wanting to cry.
When you’re by yourself in your room at night you find it hard to hold back the tears. You’re afraid to look people in the eye because you don’t want them to see that you've been crying.

A couple of questions you might want to ask yourself…
  • Do you have any of these physical symptoms?
  • If so, do you think it could be a good idea to ask for help?
