Hiding your sadness, even from yourself!
The domino effect. To avoid feeling pain, you may have thought of trying different things (isolating yourself, becoming withdrawn, consuming alcohol or drugs, adopting antisocial behaviour).

Avoiding your pain may make you feel better for the moment, but in the long run, it can lead to problems. The longer you wait to talk with someone about your problems, the bigger your troubles will become and the more difficult it will be to deal with them.

Imagine if a bus driver pretended not to see the signs saying that the bridge up ahead over the ravine isn’t finished yet. What do you think would happen? Pretending everything is all right and blinding yourself are not solutions.

A couple of questions you might want to ask yourself…
  • Have you ever done any of the things described above to avoid facing your problems?
  • What happened when you did?
  • Did these strategies have positive consequences? Or negative ones?
