Although young people see the Internet primarily as an extension of their real-life relationships, they sometimes visit sites where they can discuss their interests with new people. These encounters may result in them finding people with whom they share a passion, and encourage them to learn more about those people.


THE RISKS

Some questions to ask yourself:

“Do I know whom I’m talking to?”

• Without hearing an actual voice, it’s hard to know!

“Do I really know the other person?”

• The Internet makes it easy to tell half-truths and white lies.

“Am I thinking about my safety?”

• Stay alert above all! Especially if you’re thinking about giving out personal information (name, address, telephone number, photo, etc).

“Does anyone know where I am?”

• If you decide to meet an online acquaintance face-to-face for the first time, it is important to let a family member or a friend know. Letting people know is good prevention!
