Sex in all its forms

Masturbation

What is it?
Masturbation:
  • Is the stimulation of your body’s erogenous zones and genitals in order to derive sexual pleasure and sometimes have an orgasm
  • Allows you to explore your body and discover your erogenous zones
  • Is completely normal, just as it is to choose not to masturbate (touch or “finger” yourself); it’s your choice!
  • Is a  private act, so it’s important to choose the right time and place
  • Is done either alone or with a partner
  • Has no negative effects on health; on the contrary, it can help alleviate sexual tension

Frequency
The frequency of masturbation varies from person to person and can change at different times in life.

Masturbation is something very personal. It’s important to not compare yourself to others and to listen to your needs, values and limits.

It’s normal to continue wanting to masturbate even if you are having sexual relations with someone, because masturbation gives you a different type of pleasure.

Too much?

Masturbation may be excessive if:
  • It prevents you from participating in your regular activities (outings with friends, sports, etc.)
  • Causes you to feel ill at ease (guilt, shame, sadness)
  • Occurs in inappropriate places
  • You feel it’s taking up too much of your life and that you have lost control
In this case, try to regain control of the situation by resuming your regular activities and trying out new ones (e.g. sports, courses, youth centre, etc.) that you will enjoy. If the problem persists, consult a health professional.
