Sexual orientation

Coming out
This is the moment you tell someone about your homosexuality and you break your silence. You may feel the need to talk about your homosexuality because you don’t want to hide your love, you can’t stand any more secrets and you want to tell the people you trust. What are your reasons?

Are you ready?
If you’ve just realized that you’re gay, you’re not obliged to reveal it right away. Your sexuality concerns you and you alone. It’s up to you! You can choose to not talk about it or to do so when you feel ready.
Here are some things to take into account if you’re thinking of coming out:
  • Are you sure of your sexual orientation? Is it really a prolonged romantic and sexual interest in people of the same sex?
  • Are you prepared for people’s emotional reactions?
  • Are you ready to handle how your decision impacts your relationships (e.g. if, unfortunately, your parents don’t accept it or your friends drop you)?
  • Is it your choice to reveal your sexual orientation or are you feeling obliged to do so?

Who to talk to?

You can choose to reveal your sexual orientation initially to someone you trust and who isn’t likely to judge you.

When to talk about it?

Choose a moment when you think the person will be available to listen to you, and choose a place that’s conducive to having a private chat. You don’t want to be interrupted in the middle of coming out or to have to worry about anyone overhearing this private conversation.

Possible reactions
Keep in mind that you have no control over how people will react. Some people will find your announcement harder to take than others, and may need more time to digest the news.

Stigmas and homophobia
Some people have a negative attitude, aversion or a strong prejudice against homosexuals; it’s called homophobia. Even homosexual people can behave this way. These attitudes are often based on the fear of being different and on the fear of rejection. This is unacceptable behaviour: everyone has the right to be respected. Don’t ever forget that.
