Helping a friend

A friend is being bullied
Straight to the point, or the long way around? You may have witnessed a bullying situation and you want to directly help the person involved.

Your friend is being bullied. You can:
  • Tell them about your worries
  • Listen to them non-judgementally
  • Tell them that violence is always unacceptable, regardless of circumstances
  • Try to find solutions with them
  • Refer them to a resource person
Your friend is a bully. If you are close to a person who is a bully, you can:
  • Talk to them about your worries
  • Clearly express the idea that violence is always unacceptable, regardless of the circumstances
  • Encourage them to ask an adult for help
Someone you don’t know well may be experiencing bullying. You can:
  • Avoid encouraging the behaviours of the person who is doing the bullying
  • Show your support for the person experiencing the bullying, through your words, actions, and encouragement
  • Offer them your help, if you feel up to it
  • Talk to other people involved in the situation, so that they can intervene or act
  • Talk about the situation with a teacher, monitor, or counsellor
Better later than never. When a bullying situation arises, you may be afraid of the bully or of stepping forward and helping the person who needs it. Don’t hesitate to talk to an adult.
