Street gangs
Stay or go?
If you’re a gang member, you may:
Be scared and think of the risk you're taking by leaving (e.g. threats of revenge or assault)
• Notice that things are getting more and more violent and dangerous (e.g. a friend is hurt or killed)
• Be arrested or wanted by the police
• Realize that the consequences of your actions are serious and may affect the rest of your life (e.g. criminal record, dropping out of school, death)
Think about leaving, burning all the bridges and facing all the losses: friends, romantic partners, lifestyle, money
• Choose another lifestyle (e.g. school or work)
• Start liking or falling in love with someone who is not part of a gang
• Think about your parents and former friends and feel pressure to leave the gang because it endangers your loved ones

Think about it:

• Make a list of the pros and cons of staying in the gang or leaving.
• Identify the difficulties you'd have if you left the gang, so that you are well prepared.
• Do you know friends or adults who are not gang members and to whom you can talk in confidence?
• Feel free to seek help from school or CLSC counsellors or call us at 1 800 263-2266.
