Street gangs

You want to get out of a street gang
Step by step. Every gang is different, every situation is different, and everyone has different needs (read more here about choosing to stay in or quit a street gang). The better you identify your needs and the reasons you didn’t quit the gang earlier, the better able you’ll be to get appropriate help in quitting the gang. Do you need:
  • Information and support?
  • Protection? Are you worried about your safety?
  • Money? Do you owe gang members something?
  • To learn more about your rights? Have you committed crimes which could lead to trouble with the law?
  • To return to school or the job market?
  • To rebuild your social network?
Support. You can choose to begin the process of quitting the gang by talking about your situation with someone you trust, so that they give you support and help you find resources. Does anyone in your circle know that you’re a gang member? Which parents or friends can help you?

Professional help. Counsellors can provide you with support as you move away from your gang. They can also help you return to school or the job market. There may be programs in your neighbourhood. You can obtain help or resources from your CLSC or by contact us.
