I've been throug an eating disorder a few months ago, and now one of my close friends is going through one. I'm telling her to stop but she doesn't want to she says she's not able.. I'd really like some help about what to tell her so she can stop..

Hello Anonymous! Let’s look at this situation together.

You’re wondering what to tell your friend that’s going through an eating disorder. You know, only a health professional can diagnose an eating disorder. Do you think it would be a good idea for your friend to see one?

Unfortunately, you give little information in your e-mail. Tell me, what makes you think she has an eating disorder? What behaviours are you worried about? To help you, I invite you to have a look at the YOUR BODY, YOUR HEALTH section of our website where you’ll find a lot of information. Would you like to talk about this situation with a counsellor at your school? It is important that you don’t stay alone with this situation. Did you know that a Tel-jeunes counsellor is available for you 24/7 at 1 800 263-2266? By talking to you directly, it would be easier for us to help you. If you prefer, you could write back to us, but it would be important that you give more details about the situation. You could also give our phone number to your friend, what do you think?

You know Anonymous, it can be difficult to help someone if this person is going through something that we’ve been through ourselves. It’s okay, and very important, to listen to our limits. What do you think?

Take care!
