jonesy - girl - 15 ans (29 October 2014)

Hi, my friends at school have lately gotten into drugs. I really don't support this, and I can't help thinking about there future, except I still want to be friends, I just don't want them to do these bad things. I know talking to them won't work (I already tried) and I don't want to be the one to tell their parents. Any suggestions on what to do?

Tel-jeunes’ answer

Hi there!

Thank you for trusting us!

First, let me tell you that we did receive your 2 emails, but in order to answer as many young ones as we can each day, we ask them to send only 1 email a day. We will answer this email and ask you to write to us another day with your other question, or call us 24/7 at 1-800-263-2266, alright?

Friends can make decisions that go against our goals and values. We cannot control other people's choices, feelings, thoughts and behaviors. We can only control our own choices and behaviors. This means that we can choose to stop hanging out with our friends, or share our concerns and worries with them regarding their choices, we can talk about it with a counsellor at school or their parents and take the risk to make our friends angry. Those are hard decisions to make, but know that it is not possible to stop people from making their own choices, we can only choose to tell, stay and disagree, or leave. What would you feel more comfortable with?
