canadiangirl - girl - 19 ans (5 December 2008)

Hi, I wasnt really sure which category to put this under since it is a general/random question, so I just put it under Healthy Minds.I hope thats ok. Anyways, Im currently 19, Ill be 20 in February. My question is: Would u consider someone my age an adolescent? what category would u put me in? I dont really feel like an adult yet, but then Im not sure if Im still an adolescent....What do u think? Sorry if this question is too weird.

Hello canadiangirl,

Actually your question isn’t weird at all. I believe a lot of people can relate to it!

Categories such as child, adolescents and adults are only words. Let’s take the word adult for example. What does it mean to you? What is an “adult”? What is your conception of it?
A word can also have different meanings depending on the circumstances. Legally, being an adult starts at 18 years old. Socially it could mean something else. Etc.
I just wanted to show you that there is no obligation to put ourselves in a “category”. Do you see what I mean Canadiangirl? If you feel “in between” two categories; what would be wrong about it?

You know, growing up is a process. It is normal to go through different phases. It is also normal to feel different emotions according to where we are in the process. Some people will find it easy, others will question themselves. If you don’t feel like an adult yet, maybe it only means that you aren’t there yet. And it is completely normal. What do you think about it?

I hope my answer will help you. Remember that we are always available for you!
