Hi, so i've been dealing with depression for almost 5 years now. When i was younger, i was victim of parental abuse and i guess i'm still traumatised by all this situation. I wanted to consult the psychologist in my school but every time, in the back of my mind, i was telling myself everything will be alright and you'll get over with time, i guess it didnt happen. Sometimes i cry because i cant find any solution to my problem. I tried to talk to my friends about it but it didnt really help. Im going to college next year and i want my problem to be over. Basically every day i feel depressed and angry, i wanted to commit suicide a few years ago and sometimes i still think about it today. I really dont know what to do, im starting to isolate myself from other people without actually realizing it. Please help me.

I can tell that aren't having an easy time.. I'm glad you decided to reach out to us for help instead of keeping it to yourself!

A lot of people have different ideas about what depression is. Not everyone understands just how much it can affect someone, how depression CAN be reversed with help, although it may take some time, and most importantly, how dangerous it can be if it's left untreated... You see, some people say that their depression just went away with time, but for one, we don't know if it was in fact a depression, and also, that person can be at risk if ever they have to go through something else that is difficult because they will not have learned the tools to properly deal with the negative emotions!

You seem to have been through a lot unfortunately. 5 years of untreated depression...that's a lot! But the fact that you are open to seeing a psychologist, and also the fact that you are writing to us today lets me know that you want to fight it! You want help to get pass this! I truly command you for this because recovery comes in small steps and you've already taken one by seeking help wich is not always easy to do!

To receive some help, you can either speak to a doctor, see a counsellor at your CLSC (it's free), or, if you are more in a hurry and have the means for it, you can see a specialist in the private sector. Otherwise, it's possible to see someone at your cegep for a small cost or for free (you'd have to verify). Since you do also have suicidal thoughts sometimes, the sooner you get help, the better! The Suicide Prevention center (1866-277-3553) and us (Tel-jeunes 1800-263-2266) are available 24/7 so don't hesitate! But if ever you feel that you need immediate help, don't hesitate to call 911 or go to the hospital ok!
