[ What can I do? ]

Muchu - girl - 17 ans (30 August 2011)

I came here four years and a half ago and I have studied all my high school in English (4 th) but now according to the law I have to go to a French school, just when I am about to finish, is so hard for me. Do you think I can be home schooling? Help me please, we are two, my sister in the second year and I in the fifth year. Thanks a lot. I studied all the time in the ******* school board.

Hello Muchu,

I can see that you are stuck in a certain dilemma.
It can seem unfair that we would need to go to a French school after we've done all our other years in English. It would obviously be a hard year, trying to learn a new language and trying to integrate ourselves in a new school. How do you feel about the situation right now? What are your possible outcomes?

Although, it is possible to see this as an opportunity as well. Knowing two languages fluently helps us get jobs easier later in life, being able to get around (ask for information, meet new people, etc.), learn from a new culture; especially if we presently live in the province of Québec. There is the possibility of getting help at school or outside of school so that you can adapt better to the transition. We can take extra French classes so we learn the language faster, start watching TV or read in French, etc. Would you like to make that extra effort this year, and be greatly rewarded with your efforts later in life? It can be particularly hard at first, but did you give yourself the time to adapt to your new situation. What have you tried so far? Is there anything else you could try to make the transition easier? We can ask our parents, our teachers, etc. for help. Would you be willing to do that?

There is the possibility of being home-schooled, but ultimately it is the decision of your parents. Do you think your parents would want you to be home-schooled? What would be the advantages and the disadvantages of choosing that option? What will you want to do if you can't be home-schooled?

I'll let you think about it all, and don't hesitate to call us at 1-800-263-2266 with any of your problems. We are always there to help 24/7.
