Hi Hazel-alaska,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us. Having sex for the first time is a big thing, and often, it's a little bit scary too, isn’t it?

I can understand that you’re worried about a possible pregnancy. You know Hazel-alaska, when we become sexually active, we can be a little anxious, and anxiety can cause all types of scary thoughts, and when they occur, it can be very difficult to push the thought away, unfortunately. To stay calm, we have to remind ourselves that condoms are a great contraceptive method because they offer a protection against unwanted pregnancy as well as the transmission of most STIs. Condoms are also 97% effective when used properly and consistently!

To make sure they are used correctly, it’s important to be careful about certain things. First off, it’s important to take caution when opening the wrapper to avoid tearing the condom with teeth, fingernails, or rings. It’s also important to pinch the air out of the tip of the condom before putting it on, and to allow a space at the tip of the penis so that semen has a place to collect. A new condom must also be used at every sexual relation, and must be in place before there is any genital contact. If you and your partner are choosing to use lubricants, make sure it is water-based (oil-based lubricants, such as Vaseline, massage oils, and body lotions can cause condoms to leak or break).

What about you Hazel-alaska, do you feel that you and your partner followed these instructions? Did you notice clues that might indicate that the condom wasn’t properly used? Was your partner worried as well? If you want, you can call us and we’ll look at the situation together. Otherwise, if you feel that you might be afraid of unwanted pregnancy at each and every sexual intercourse, you might want to consider the possibility of combining the use of condoms with another contraceptive method (such as the pill) temporarily . Would that reassure you?

Take good care of yourself, and don't hesitate to call us if you need to talk. We're here for you 24/7!
